Lee Seung Yeol (이승열)
July 13, 2007 by docmitasha
I was amazed that I’ve yet to write a post on Lee Seung Yeol (also romanized, Yi Sung Yol, the Lee in Korean is pronounced as “ee,” there is no L in the hangul form: 이), an amazing musician, one of my favorites, whose voice had me spell-bound from the first time I stumbled upon him on youtube, while searching for “…Ing” videos.

I fell in love. I looked everywhere for more information, more videos, songs, anything…all in vain. He is scandalously underrated in the international korean music scene, from what I can tell. I don’t have much information about his popularity in Korea itself (I’m hoping he’s a legend there), but I was disappointed how little he’s known outside, with the burgeoning Korean pop/rock/music industry which is blossoming each day and spreading across the world. Perhaps its the younger generations who haven’t woken up to his work, or the mainstream k-pop is taking up all the waves. While groups like Loveholic are slowly making their way to the forefront and gaining widespread popularity, I guess it’ll take time before the indie scene is truly appreciated and equally well promoted worldwide, as it deserves to be (there are some amazing indie artists in Korea).
I was frustrated at first with the apparent lack of popularity. Sadly, I’ve only met a couple people who share my complete fascination with his music and his voice. I finally decided that was a good thing. This man should rightfully be known all over the world, and perhaps one day he will, but till then I’m just glad to know about his music and relish it. 이 might never become mainstream or a big k-star (something tells me he doesn’t want that either), but I think the low-profile and mysterious quality allows him to maintain the originality of his music. And I’ve also realized that the few who do cherish him have a fine taste in music, and their appreciation is not affected by any other factor but their genuine admiration of what he brings to music, and the rock scene. And then, isn’t it said that the water from the most remote of springs is the sweetest?
I do wish I could learn more about who he is and what drives him as a musician, which is always fascinating to me. Until I can investigate it further (and perhaps a better hold on Korean and Hangul would help), I’m satisfied with understanding his music. His more popular songs are “Gi Da Rim” from the movie …Ing, “Be My Love” from the hit k-drama My Lovely Samsoon where he sang for Clazziquai, and the song on the OST of the recent k-drama Que Sera Sera–”우리는 (Urinun: Us),” which will without fail be listed on my list of lifetime favorites. His second album, In Exchange, is a wonderful collection of modern rock. Its rock with a twist of something else, an indescribable quality. I have yet to listen to the first one (haven’t been able to order it yet), but the second one has me mesmerized. I know I’m using all these big words, just trying to find more synonyms, but simple words don’t seem to do any justice.
It is his voice that I love most. It is deep, masculine, and rich with emotion. I’ve always been a fan of singers who were able to bring emotion to their voice, and 이 does that to the extent that even though I don’t understand a lot of the lyrics, I can feel the meaning of the songs by the raw emotion in his tone. His voice is melodious, but not in the typical way. I think there would be many who’d be turned off because its not the conventional voice. It has a mellowness to it, but at the same time it conveys strong feelings, a passionate tone, perhaps a tragic one at times when the lyrics demand it. Each time I listen to a song, especially the very beginning of my favorite, Urinun, I get this strange rush. My mood can immediately change when the song comes on my ipod and I’ll be too caught up with his voice, the energy, the passion and feeling in the song to think about my own silly conflicts or worries.
이 is daring with his music. It traverses very different grounds. Just like indie groups like My Aunt Mary, or Loveholic, 이 stands on his own, completely different and incomparable. The music matches his voice…sometimes conveying a desperate urgency, sometimes a mellow calm, sometimes an adventurous energy. Its definitely has the alternative rock quality, but it never gets loud or exhausting to hear, never plays havoc on your eardrums. The beats are always rhythmic, the instruments play in perfect harmony. I especially love the guitar in several of his songs (please note this is my completely amateur opinion). He has been compared to Bono by several people, but I personally dislike drawing comparisons between musicians, especially legendary musicians. The following song is from an anime OST, Wonderful Days: 비상 BiSang (Fly High).

이 often crosses over into English, using phrases and words as several other Korean musicians do, but it never sounds forced in or unnatural, and is not marred by any strange accent or mispronunciation. He incorporates that cross-language style in this next song, another favorite, 기억할게 | Gieokhalke (I will Remember). The MV is really neat and very well conceptualized, and this is the first time I finally saw the man behind the voice, though still shrouded in shadows. He’s a true rockstar.
(I especially love the entrance and the final, soft, end (어디에: audhiye, which means where are you)).

And in this song, 시간의 끝 (Shigane kkut-Last Time), which also blows me away each time.
But I can’t let you get away….
I could rave about 이 for another couple pages at the least, and if you ever ask me in person I could take you song by song and tell you the little details which have led me to admire and be awed by his music. I’m not a musician, and by no means do I have any kind of professional expertise, but as a music lover (understatement), I support 이 with complete confidence and devotion. There are musicians whom I’ll rave about initially, and then I’ll begin noticing flaws, certain inconsistencies, perhaps forced styles that take away from the true rhythm, or their music will just stop speaking to me. But from the first time I heard his music, I knew I’d always be a fan. Lovers of fine music, especially rock, deserve to hear 이, on an international level. I hope one day he reaches that zenith. For now I continue to hope that he’ll keep growing and developing his work, expanding his horizons and maintaining his originality, and I’ll keep being mesmerized by his voice.

I’m rather late considering you posted this article well over a month ago, but I just love the fact that someone finally wrote a decent review of Lee Seung Yul in English.
I first came across his work in the kdrama “One Fine Day” a little over 6 months ago. The song was “Iyoo” and as I watched the show I couldn’t help but fall in love with that one song in particular. I found the OST floating around online and found that it was Lee who was behind the music but I could never find anything on him (as you know, google searches of “Lee Seung Yul” turn up every Lee Seung BUT the one we’re looking for).
I was quite dissappointed, but after listening to Japanese and Korean music for about 5 years now, I’m quite used to that. Until I stumbled upon Shigane kkut. That’s when I knew that I’d be a LSY fan for the rest of my life. That song is probably the single most beautiful song I’ve ever heard.
It’s quite rare to find any LSY fans here in the States and there is no Wikipedia entry or Fansite dedicated to him. As such I don’t have anymore information than you yourself have but it’s nice to find someone who shares the same passion for his music that I myself have.
I’ve already purchased his second album which is absolutely amazing as is everything he does. I’m not sure how famous he is in Korea, but he’s done songs for so many amazing dramas and collaborated with so many great artists that I’d have to imagine he’s quite well-known there.
Hopefully I’ll be able to go to Korea myself one day and see him in concert. But until then, Lee Seung Yul is and shall remain my favorite Korean artist of all time.
Gabbie, its always, always, great to hear from LSY fans. A lot of people apparently end up here now when googling him, and I appreciate it when someone leaves a comment or lets me hear their opinion. I feel disappointed at the lack of reviews on him too…even sites that sell his music don’t get a lot of feedback, which is surprising to me (I’m assuming, like you said, that his popularity is greatest withing Korea). I’m hoping that will change with time as more people outside of Korea discover him. I think his low profile is partly because he’s more about the music and not about selling himself out to the world like a lot of K-musicians tend to do nowadays.
You’re right, Shigane Kkut is definitely an amazing, amazing song. Urinun was the one that did it for me. All I had to hear was the first word, the very start, and I was in for life. I’ve also found it difficult to find many LSY fans, though I run across a couple here and there on youtube, etc, but I like to think we’re the special, lucky few, in on a wonderful secret! The point of making this post (apart from raving about him because I needed to) was to get to hear from others who love his music.
Lets hope and try hard to see him one day in concert–thats a true dream for me! Till then, if you’d ever like to share more about him or come across anything, remember this blog, or send me an email!
PS: I’m planning to write reviews on both his first and second album eventually, and I’d love to share any comments you have!
I love his sound and similar to a singer from Ireland back in 1980’s called U2 (Bono). I love to in fact that there is something else that rhythm the half blues half pop in the term of Korean music.
The way his music really passes along the ear of most people and it pulls the different ethnic of the music industry itself. Despite of everything else, that kind a brings up the memory of U2 back to the present moment that has lost long time ago. We often heard the word of back to 70’s music around the restaurants or cafes. I believe to most musician they would probably will use some of the effect of 70’s in their music and unlikely most of the musician use their own nature’s kind of music to present.
Let’s just hope they stay with their own nature and give more to the society a better music. These days few songs that ever sounds good at all. Aren’t you agree?
Anila, I have heard LSY being compared to U2 before. And yes, he is definitely one of the finest musicians out there today, and not just on the Korean music scene. Thanks for your comments!
Wow, what a loving review. o_o I’ve been recommended him before, but I’m even more eager to try him now after reading your entry. Thanks for this, and I hope I come to have the same feelings as you about him.

I ran across 이승열 back when I fell in love with the soundtrack to …Ing (which has a number of other gems on it as well). I really liked 기다림, but it wasn’t enough to make me seek out his album. Later, when I heard 시간의 끝 while running around on YouTube, it was that song that convinced me to check out his full albums. So I purchased his first one and am awaiting its arrival in a couple weeks.
Hi John/Ji Hoon.
Do let me know what you think of the first one. I’m sure it will be amazing too and hopefully I’ll make it a christmas present to myself this year!
I absolutely love Lee Seung Yul as well. I found both of his albums thankfully, and have it stored in my iTunes. If you’d like, I can send you the downloads.
Thank you Miky, but I’ll be purchasing the first one soon. If you have any thoughts about the album, esp as compared to the second one, do post.
hello.. i sorta of fell in love w the singer’s voice from his song in QSS.. thanks fr yr article…
Hi, I’m quite new to lee sung yeol. I heard him for the first time singing urinun for que sera sera..man that’s a wonderful song that I kept repeating over and over and still being blown out by the intensity of his voice. I would really love to buy his albums. Question is: in yes asia link that you gave, the name of the artist written is not lee sung yeol but yi sung yol. Is it the same person? (I suspect so, but I just want to make sure before committing myself to buy the album). Thanks for the information and review of his great music.
Baijing,
I’m so glad you discovered his amazing, intense voice. Urinun, as I’ve said many times, is my favorite, and largely because of that intensity and passion that is inherent in his voice.
Yes, it is the same artist….in Hangul, Lee is actually ‘ee’ and the Y is just silent. So it becomes Yi Sung Yol. Even I had a hard time finding his albums before realizing that! Lee is the romanized name.
I hope you enjoy the albums–I’m sure you’ll find them to be well-worth the buy!
I’m, like Gabbie, first heard of him through the kdrama “One Fine Day” and absolutely loved that ee yoo/Iyoo song he did. It reminds me a lot of Radiohead in that song. Thanks for the entry!
Thanks for stopping by, Ann! I love how new fans search for him and discover this page every day!
So, after finally hearing YSY’s first album, I have to say that I like it overall. When he writes a really good song, they’re really good, but I have to admit that I prefer his singles to his regular album tracks–not that they’re bad, but outside of his unique voice–the rest don’t click with me as well. Still, I really like at least four songs from the first album and it’s fine just listening through the whole album, I don’t hate anything he does. So, overall, I think it’s a worthwhile purchase.
Hi John/Ji Hoon,
Thanks for your thoughts. Since my Korean is not that great, I still depend on the occasional translation to understand the lyrics so I can’t really say much about a lot of the songs. But I think you may be right in that when he writes a really good song, its really good.
Good hearing your opinions!

Hi Anna,
Great that you found this page, and I am always delighted to hear from other people who stumble upon him. His voice definitely moves you, and I’ve found that if you love him, you just do, and the power of his voice is inexplicable. Thank you for commenting!
I only just found this guy after watching Spotlight, and I searched everywhere trying to find information on him. Thank goodness I found this!
I think perhaps Bono could be a reasonable comparison… but I’d actually go for recent INXS. But you’re right, they’re all legendary, and they can only be that if they have their own sound. Yi has this.
Thank you so much!
Hi Briar! Thanks for commenting. Yep, the comparison has been done time and time again, and yes, Yi does have his own sound. I didn’t know he had a song on the Spotlight OST…I’ll have to go check that out asap now! Thanks for that!
