“Inside the chocolate case is the life of a person. In Forrest Gump, the main character’s mother says “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’ll get.” Whatever I do or pick up, changes the chocolates inside…..There were good ones and there were bad ones. But there’s nothing I can do about it. The case is mine and all the chocolate inside it I had to eat anyway. When and what I will eat, that makes the difference. But with time, something is different. When I was child, I didn’t have any fear and ate whichever one I saw. But now…I think a lot and consider carefully, picking which one to eat.
If I wanted anything more, it would be for no more bitter rum to be in my chocolates. I hope I’ve already eaten all the ones with bitter rum, and destroyed them.”
(Dialogue from Ep 1, My Lovely Samsoon, translated from Korean)
I’ve seen a lot of metaphors for life, and chocolate is a cliche, but something about the honesty and innocence and just simplicity in this dialogue hits me strong. I KNOW that feeling. Whatever is awaiting me in my box next, I’ll eat, and eat willingly, and if its bitter, I’ll just have to swallow it down. I hope its sweet though…….
